01

Why SME Owners Need Structured App Support

Many SME owners build a live app to solve a specific business problem, then face pressure to keep it running while focusing on growth. Security patches pile up. Users report bugs. Performance degrades during busy periods. Without a dedicated team, these tasks either get ignored or pull your technical founder away from strategy. Structured app support shifts this burden to a partner who handles the routine work. You get predictable costs, regular updates, and faster bug turnaround. Your team stays focused on selling and building the business, not babysitting infrastructure.

Maintenance That Fits Your Budget and Priorities

App maintenance retainers give you a fixed monthly cost for ongoing support. This typically covers bug fixes within an agreed response time, regular security updates, performance monitoring, and a set number of hours for smaller feature requests or improvements. Instead of emergency calls or unexpected bills, you have clarity on what's included and what costs extra. This model works well for SMEs because it removes the uncertainty of support costs while ensuring your app gets attention before problems affect your users or revenue.

Many SME owners inherit older applications built on outdated technology stacks or by developers who are no longer available. Legacy application support doesn't mean you're stuck with a dying system. We assess what's actually critical, what technical debt matters most, and prioritize updates that reduce security risk and operational friction. Some apps benefit from gradual modernization. Others run reliably with minimal changes. We explain the tradeoffs in plain language, so you decide what's worth the investment and what can wait.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Evolve ran a series of workshops with key business stakeholders to understand the business challenge we were facing and to help us define the right solution. The team then held my hand every step of the way in developing our Discount and Rebate Management Solution, which went live in January across 7 countries.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

SME owners across the UK often build their first software product with limited technical resources. As the business grows, the app becomes mission-critical, but hiring a full-time developer or DevOps engineer adds fixed cost and complexity. App support and software maintenance services for SME business owners solve this by providing scheduled attention to bug fixes, security updates and performance tuning without the overhead of permanent headcount. This is especially relevant for founders who understand technology enough to spot problems, but lack the bandwidth to fix them while running sales, operations and customer support.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

What exactly gets covered in an app maintenance retainer?

A typical retainer includes bug fixes with a defined response time (for example, critical bugs within 24 hours, non-critical within 3-5 days), scheduled security patches and OS updates, performance monitoring and optimization, and a set number of development hours per month for smaller improvements. Anything outside the retainer (major rewrites, significant new features, architectural changes) is quoted separately. We agree the terms upfront so there are no surprises.

How do you prioritize between fixing bugs and adding features?

Security and critical stability issues come first. After those are handled, we work through the backlog based on your business priorities. Most retainers include a fixed number of hours for feature work each month. If a bug impacts revenue or user experience, it jumps the queue. We keep you updated on what's in progress and explain why something might be deferred if the retainer hours are full.

What happens if our app grows faster than expected?

Growth is a good problem. If your app starts struggling under load, we run diagnostics to identify bottlenecks. Some issues are quick fixes (database queries, caching). Others require more substantial work, like moving to a larger server or restructuring data storage. We explain the options and costs, then help you decide what's worth the investment based on your growth plans and revenue.

Can you take over support for an app built by another developer?

Yes. We assess the code, documentation and infrastructure first. If the original developer left good documentation or the code is clean, the transition is straightforward. If not, there's some upfront work to understand the app and set up proper monitoring. We'll estimate this and discuss whether it makes sense to modernize parts of the system while we're mapping it out. Either way, we get you to stable, supported ground quickly.

How often will our app need updates?

Security patches depend on what's running (for example, framework versions, database software, hosting platform). Critical patches should go out within days of release. OS and framework updates usually happen quarterly or when a major vulnerability is announced. We monitor these for you and schedule updates during low-traffic windows so there's minimal user impact. Performance tuning happens as needed based on traffic and usage patterns.

What if we need to scale or add new features later?

As your business grows, the app often needs more capability. We work with you to plan larger feature projects, run them alongside maintenance, or bring in more capacity if the work is substantial. Some changes start as maintenance improvements. Others are planned projects with their own timeline and cost. Having a stable maintenance foundation makes scaling smoother because the app is healthy before you add complexity.
