01

Why Enterprise Legacy Modernisation Fails (and How to Avoid It)

Most legacy system migrations stumble because organisations treat them as pure technical problems. Stakeholder misalignment, unclear success metrics, and underestimated complexity derail projects. Large enterprises have competing priorities: operations can't stop, security teams need assurance, finance wants ROI clarity, and IT leaders face pressure to prove business value. Evolved Ideas starts by mapping your actual dependencies, not guessing. We speak to ops teams, business owners, compliance leads. Only then do we propose a migration roadmap that addresses governance, cost, and risk in parallel. Your system stays live. Complexity gets managed, not hidden.

Monolith to Microservices: A Staged, Reversible Approach

Ripping out a legacy monolith in one cut is rarely sensible at enterprise scale. We build a migration strategy that extracts services incrementally, often starting with a new API layer that sits alongside the old system. This lets you test, learn, and roll back without betting the business. Each extracted service is containerised and tested in isolation before traffic flows to it. Your monolith shrinks, your microservices grow, and the old system becomes a legacy integration point you can eventually retire. Database migration happens in tandem, often with a period where both systems stay in sync, so if something breaks, you flip back. Operations stay calm. Downtime is hours, not days.

Enterprises cannot afford to modernise without control. Your IT governance framework, compliance requirements, and security standards must shape the migration plan from the start. Evolved Ideas aligns migration work with your policies: infrastructure-as-code reviews, secret management, network segmentation, audit logging, change control gates. We don't ask for forgiveness later. Our Centre of Excellence maintains consistent security and scalability standards across all client work. That means your new system inherits best practice before it goes live, and you have evidence of how every decision was made and approved. Regulators and auditors see a clean story.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Evolve ran a series of workshops with key business stakeholders to understand the business challenge we were facing and to help us define the right solution. The team then held my hand every step of the way in developing our Discount and Rebate Management Solution, which went live in January across 7 countries.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

Enterprise legacy modernisation is critical for UK-regulated industries and large organisations operating across Europe. Compliance frameworks (GDPR, FCA, PCI-DSS) and stakeholder governance make it essential to have a partner who understands both the technical depth of refactoring complex systems and the business discipline required to keep boards, auditors, and operations aligned. Evolved Ideas' distributed team across the UK, Spain, and Ukraine provides nearshore delivery with timezone overlap and local market expertise. UK-based leadership stays close to your governance and compliance context, while engineering capacity and cost efficiency come from proven, English-speaking teams. This model suits enterprises that need control without sacrificing delivery pace or quality.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

How long does a typical monolith to microservices migration take?

Duration depends on system size, complexity, and your appetite for parallel operation. A mid-sized monolith typically takes 6-12 months in phases. We recommend starting with an assessment to map dependencies and data flows, then breaking the work into extractable services. Each service is migrated and validated separately, so you get wins along the way rather than waiting for a big-bang cutover. Your timeline is driven by business priorities, not a fixed template.

What happens to our data during the migration?

Data integrity is non-negotiable. We run dual-write periods where new services and the legacy system both record transactions. This gives us a way to validate that no data is lost and that both systems agree before we switch traffic. ETL pipelines are tested repeatedly in staging before they touch production. We maintain full audit trails of every record that moves, so if a discrepancy surfaces, we can trace it and fix it. Your data never disappears. Your compliance team gets a complete record of the migration.

Can we keep the old system running while we build the new one?

Yes. That's the standard approach. We typically run both systems in parallel for a period, often with the new services handling incremental loads or specific user segments first. This reduces risk because you have an immediate rollback plan if something goes wrong. Once the new system has handled live traffic safely for a defined period, you gradually shift more load over. The old system eventually becomes read-only, then an archive. This approach costs more upfront in infrastructure, but it's far cheaper than discovering a critical bug after a forced cutover.

How do you ensure the new system meets our security and compliance standards?

Security is baked into the architecture from design phase onwards. We map your compliance requirements (ISO 27001, SOC 2, sector-specific rules) and encode them into infrastructure-as-code, network policies, and access controls. Our Centre of Excellence maintains a library of approved patterns, so your new microservices inherit security by default. Before any service goes live, it's scanned for vulnerabilities, and its deployment is gated by your change control process. You have visibility into what changed, why, and who approved it.

What if we discover mid-migration that a service can't be extracted the way we planned?

Discovery problems are normal. That's why we stage the work and validate early. If a service has hidden dependencies, we find them during design or the first extraction attempt, not after six months of work. At that point, we adjust the plan. We might extract a larger slice of functionality than expected, or reorder which services we migrate first. The phased approach gives us room to learn and adapt without scrapping months of effort.

How does the new system integrate with legacy applications we're not migrating yet?

Most enterprises have a portfolio of systems, and you won't migrate everything at once. We build integration layers (APIs, message queues, or shared caches) that let new and old systems talk cleanly. Legacy applications can call new microservices via REST or gRPC. New services can call legacy systems through abstraction layers that hide complexity. Over time, you can wrap, retire, or modernise those legacy systems independently. The integration layer becomes your migration backbone.
