01

Why legacy software becomes a founder's problem

Inherited legacy systems often feel invisible until they stop working. Old code runs on outdated infrastructure, requires specialist developers to maintain, and blocks new features because change feels too risky. For non-technical founders, this creates a silent drag on the business: slower releases, higher support costs, and talented engineers spending time on defensive patching instead of building. Legacy application migration isn't just a tech problem. It's a business constraint that affects how fast you can move, who you can hire, and what your customers experience. The longer you wait, the harder and more expensive the work becomes.

How modernisation translates to business outcomes

Refactoring or migrating outdated systems to modern, cloud-native platforms means your product team moves faster. You stop paying for infrastructure you don't need. You attract engineers who want to work with current technology, not legacy code. Legacy software modernisation UK teams do this by understanding your actual business goals first: Do you need to launch new features? Cut operational costs? Open new markets? We translate those goals into technical decisions. A monolith-to-microservices migration or cloud refactoring isn't done for its own sake. It's done because the new architecture directly supports what you're trying to build next.

Start with an honest audit. We review your legacy system, document what actually matters (data integrity, uptime, performance), and identify what's creating the most friction. Then we plan a phased approach. You don't have to migrate everything at once. We often move high-risk or high-friction parts first, prove the new platform works, and then expand. Throughout the process, you get clear reports: what we've moved, what's stable, what happens next. No technical jargon hiding the real costs or timelines. For non-technical founders, this means you can actually understand the trade-offs and sign off on decisions with confidence.

WHAT YOU GET

Built around how your business works

  • Your legacy software doesn't have to be a business liability. Modernisation moves you from patching old code to running a stable, scalable platform.
  • Translation matters. We explain monolith-to-microservices migration and cloud-native refactoring in terms of what it means for your product roadmap, costs, and team velocity.
  • Zero-downtime migration is possible. Your users keep working while we move data and systems to modern infrastructure behind the scenes.
  • Non-technical founders often inherit legacy systems without understanding the technical debt. We audit what you have, show you the business risks, and map the path forward.
  • Modern cloud platforms cost less to run and update than old on-premise systems. You free up engineering time for features your customers actually want.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Evolve ran a series of workshops with key business stakeholders to understand the business challenge we were facing and to help us define the right solution. The team then held my hand every step of the way in developing our Discount and Rebate Management Solution, which went live in January across 7 countries.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

Non-technical founders in the UK often inherit legacy systems from earlier development phases or previous vendors. They're under pressure to release features faster but constrained by old code that's hard to change. Without technical background, it's hard to know whether modernisation is urgent or optional, or whether a quoted cost is reasonable. This is where a consultative partner matters. We audit the actual business risk in your legacy system, explain what modernisation does for your specific roadmap, and guide you through the investment decision in business terms, not technical ones.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

How do I know if my legacy system needs modernising?

Several signs suggest modernisation is overdue. Your engineering team spends most sprints fixing bugs instead of building features. Onboarding new developers takes weeks because the codebase is hard to understand. Deploying changes feels risky, so releases are infrequent. Your infrastructure costs stay high even though usage hasn't grown. For non-technical founders, a simple check: ask your engineering lead how much time each month goes to defensive work (bug fixes, stability, keeping the lights on) versus building new things. If it's more than 30 percent defensive, modernisation usually pays for itself quickly.

What's the difference between refactoring and migrating?

Refactoring improves the code while keeping the same overall architecture and platform. You're cleaning up old logic, removing duplication, and making it easier to maintain. Migration moves the entire system to a new platform, often from on-premise to cloud or from a monolith to microservices. Both reduce technical debt. Refactoring is usually faster and lower risk, but has a ceiling on how much it improves things. Migration is more disruptive but opens up new possibilities for scaling, cost savings, and development speed. We assess which approach fits your business first.

Will modernisation cause downtime?

It depends on your approach. A risky big-bang cutover can cause outages. A phased migration, done properly, runs the old and new systems in parallel while we move traffic gradually. Your users see no interruption. Data moves with full validation, so nothing is lost. This takes longer than a cutover but removes the business risk. For a non-technical founder, the trade-off is worth understanding: a longer, safer migration costs more upfront but eliminates the nightmare scenario of a failed switch.

How much does legacy system modernisation cost?

Cost depends on the size of your system, how risky the migration is, and how much of it you modernise at once. A small legacy application might take a few months and cost less than a year of engineering salaries. A large system with complex data and integrations takes longer. The best conversation starts with: what's modernisation costing you right now? Operational overhead, slow releases, ability to hire. Compare that against the modernisation investment. Most founders find the payback happens within 12 to 24 months through freed-up engineering capacity and lower infrastructure costs.

What happens to our data during migration?

Data stays with you. We map your data from the old system to the new one, validate every record, and keep historical data accessible if needed. During migration, we run both systems in parallel until we're confident the new system has all the right data and is working correctly. Then we switch over. No data loss, no gaps in records. For non-technical founders, this is typically the biggest anxiety point, so we always involve your team in validation and give you clear sign-off at each stage.

Can we keep parts of the old system while modernising other parts?

Yes. A phased modernisation is often smarter than trying to replace everything at once. You identify the parts causing the most pain or blocking new features, modernise those first, and leave stable legacy components running if they're not in the way. This reduces risk, spreads the cost over time, and lets you prove the new approach works before going all in. It also keeps your business moving forward during the transition instead of grinding to a halt while everything is rebuilt.
