Why modernise legacy systems now

Outdated systems carry high maintenance costs, security vulnerabilities, and slow deployment cycles. They constrain your ability to add features, scale infrastructure, or respond to market changes. Modernisation moves code to cloud-native architectures, reducing operational overhead and giving teams velocity. The refactoring or migration process is deliberate: we assess your codebase, identify which components to migrate, which to retire, and which to leave alone. This staged approach minimises risk and keeps systems live during the transition.

Monolithic applications are difficult to scale, test, and deploy independently. Converting to microservices architecture allows teams to develop, test, and release components separately, reducing deployment friction. This is not a simple rewrite. We examine your monolith, identify service boundaries, extract components incrementally, and deploy behind feature flags or API gateways. Teams can then own and scale individual services without re-architecting the entire platform. Data consistency, API contracts, and deployment orchestration require careful planning, which is why a structured approach matters.

Monolith to microservices: breaking the bottleneck

03

Retainer support after go-live

Modernisation does not end at deployment. New cloud architectures require ongoing tuning: database optimisation, container orchestration adjustments, monitoring and alerting improvements, and security patches. Our retainer model covers regular maintenance, performance reviews, and incremental enhancements. You receive predictable costs and a dedicated team that understands your platform, reducing context-switching and accelerating incident response. Retainers scale with your needs, so you can expand support during heavy development or contract during quieter periods.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

CTOs and IT Directors across the UK face ageing systems that drain engineering time and slow product delivery. Legacy application migration is often high-priority but high-risk, requiring deep expertise in both old and new technologies. Evolved Ideas' UK-based team, combined with nearshore capacity in Spain and Ukraine, provides flexible resourcing for large modernisation projects while maintaining timezone overlap for critical decisions and daily standups. This hybrid model helps UK organisations complete migrations within realistic budgets and timelines without compromising quality or stability.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

What is the difference between refactoring and a full rewrite?

Refactoring improves code structure and performance within the existing architecture. A full rewrite replaces the old system entirely with new code, typically when refactoring is too costly or the technology gap is too wide. Most modernisation projects combine both: refactor critical business logic, rewrite UI layers, and migrate data incrementally. This hybrid approach reduces risk and keeps teams delivering features during the transition.

How do you prevent data loss during a legacy application migration?

Data integrity is critical. We use staged migration strategies: run old and new systems in parallel, validate data sync between them, test rollback procedures, and build reconciliation checks. Schema mappings are tested repeatedly before cutover. If issues arise, we revert to the old system without data loss. This parallel-run period adds time but eliminates the risk of unrecoverable data corruption.

Can we migrate gradually without a hard cutover?

Yes. Gradual migration is often safer than a single cutover event. Techniques include feature flags to route traffic between old and new systems, API gateways to decouple front-end from back-end changes, and strangler fig patterns to incrementally replace components. You scale up new services slowly while retiring old ones piece by piece. This extends the timeline but reduces operational risk and gives teams confidence before going fully live.

What happens if our legacy system uses outdated infrastructure we cannot easily replicate?

We assess what truly depends on that infrastructure versus what is just historical convention. Often, old hardware constraints are no longer relevant in the cloud. If dependencies are genuine, we either emulate them (containerised old environments) or refactor that layer separately. The goal is to move core business logic to modern platforms while minimising changes to proprietary or heavily customised systems.

How long does legacy system modernisation typically take?

Timelines depend on codebase size, system complexity, data volume, and your tolerance for parallel running. Small modernisations may take 3-4 months. Large monolith-to-microservices projects typically run 9-18 months. We scope each project individually, breaking it into milestones so you see progress and can adjust scope without delaying the entire delivery. Regular demos and retro-active reviews keep the project on track.

What skills does your team bring to legacy modernisation projects?

Our developers specialise in extracting business logic from legacy code, designing cloud-native architectures, leading data migrations, and managing infrastructure as code. We also bring ops expertise to containerisation, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipeline design, and monitoring. Equally important is our consultative approach: we listen to your IT strategy before prescribing a technical solution, so modernisation aligns with your broader business and technology roadmap.
