How Extended Team Members Integrate

Engineering managers often face a choice: hire permanent staff (slow, expensive, long-term commitment) or parachute in contractors who don't know your codebase. Managed project delivery sits between. We embed developers, QA engineers and DevOps specialists who become part of your team. They attend your standups, follow your deployment practices, use your tools, and report through your usual channels. They're not offshore black boxes. They're extensions of your engineering function, available for the duration of the project and beyond if needed. This model works because context stays intact and your processes remain the centre of gravity.

End-to-End Ownership Reduces Your Friction

When projects fragment across multiple vendors or internal teams, responsibility becomes unclear. Who owns the discovery phase? Who's accountable if timelines slip? What happens when QA finds issues in the build? Managed project delivery means one party owns the entire arc. We scope the work, agree on deliverables with your stakeholders, build to spec, test against acceptance criteria, and support the launch. Your engineering managers stay in the loop but aren't drowning in coordination. The model also means your internal team can focus on architecture, mentoring, and strategic work instead of context-switching between internal projects and external dependencies.

Product directors and operations leaders often commission projects but rely on engineering managers to deliver them. When capacity is tight, that partnership breaks down. Managed software project delivery gives product and ops a way to fund and execute initiatives without demanding emergency headcount. Engineering managers get the team they need without permanent overhead. Projects have clear ownership, deadlines and accountability. And because the extended team integrates into your processes, knowledge doesn't disappear at handoff. We've worked with SME leadership teams who used this model to ship features they'd shelved for months, or to modernise legacy systems without pulling core engineers off production support.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Evolve ran a series of workshops with key business stakeholders to understand the business challenge we were facing and to help us define the right solution. The team then held my hand every step of the way in developing our Discount and Rebate Management Solution, which went live in January across 7 countries.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

Engineering managers at UK SMEs and growing companies face a unique pressure: product and ops teams expect faster delivery, but permanent headcount approval moves slowly and remote hiring across Europe is increasingly common. Managed project delivery addresses this by providing integrated capacity (developers, QA, DevOps) that aligns with your engineering standards without requiring restructuring or long-term contracts. Our teams in Leicester, Spain and Ukraine operate on UK-friendly timezones, so your daily standups work without friction. This model has particular value for product and operations-led organisations where engineering is often the constraint, not the vision.

OUR PROVEN PROCESS

From first call to ongoing support

Our process has guided startups, scaleups and enterprises from concept to reality, and continues after launch.

  1. 01

    Discovery

A free 30-minute consultation followed by a stakeholder workshop, where we listen to your challenges, validate assumptions and build an outside-in view of your situation.

  2. 02

    Plan & design

We scope the project, define milestones and deliverables, then research your market, wireframe the UX and prototype the UI so the direction is agreed before a line of code.

  3. 03

    Build

We assemble your dedicated team, establish reporting and work in iterative Scrum sprints, delivering a working MVP or proof of concept you can test with real users.

  4. 04

    Launch & support

We ship, sign off, and keep your product current through our support service or a permanent extended team as your business evolves.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

What's the difference between managed projects and hiring contractors?

Contractors typically work to a brief and hand off. Managed projects come with end-to-end accountability. We own the delivery outcomes, coordinate internally, manage scope changes, and stay for testing and launch support. Your team points the direction; we handle resourcing, timeline management, and quality control. You also avoid the overhead of recruiting, onboarding and managing individual freelancers.

Can your team work in our existing development environment?

Yes. Your developers, QA and DevOps use your repositories, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring tools and communication channels. We adapt to your standards, not the other way round. Before we start, we spend time understanding your architecture, deployment practices and team norms so there's no awkward onboarding period. This makes the integrated team effective from day one.

How do you handle scope changes or unexpected technical challenges?

We build scope management into the project contract. Early phases (discovery and design) establish clear requirements and technical estimates. If changes arise mid-project, we flag them, assess impact, and agree adjustments with your product and engineering leads before proceeding. This stops surprises at launch. For unexpected technical complexity, we surface it early, propose solutions, and don't hide behind a fixed contract.

What happens when the project ends? Can you support it afterwards?

Projects and support are separate conversations. Once live, you own the application. If you need ongoing maintenance, fixes or feature development, we can discuss a support retainer. Many clients do this because the team already knows the codebase and your processes. But there's no lock-in. You can hand over to your own team, another vendor, or keep us on for incremental work.

How does this model work for product teams who aren't technical?

Product and operations directors benefit because they get a single point of contact (usually the engineering lead on our side) who translates technical reality into business impact. We help define what success looks like, not just ship code. Regular demos and stakeholder updates mean product teams stay informed without needing to understand DevOps pipelines. Engineering managers stay involved in technical decisions, so product doesn't get surprised at the end.

Do you work on fixed budgets or time-and-materials?

Both. Fixed-price works for well-scoped projects where requirements are clear upfront. Time-and-materials suits exploratory work or products where the scope may evolve. We discuss the project scope and your risk tolerance first, then propose the right model. We don't compete on price, so we're honest about what a project costs and why.
