01

Why Enterprise Builds Fail at the Discovery Stage

Large organisations face a specific discovery challenge: multiple stakeholders hold different assumptions about scope, timeline, and technical constraints. A CTO may envision one architecture; the chief digital officer wants faster time-to-market; procurement worries about long-term cost; and the business sponsor expects a fixed delivery date. Without structured discovery, these gaps surface mid-build, triggering re-architecture, team friction, and budget overruns. A technical discovery workshop surfaces these tensions early, maps dependencies, and creates a shared source of truth that procurement, security, and delivery teams can all reference. The result is a realistic roadmap and a governance framework that survives the first stakeholder challenge.

What a Structured Technical Discovery Looks Like

Our discovery process starts with understanding your business problem, not jumping to technology choices. We interview key stakeholders across business, security, operations, and technology to map constraints and priorities. We sketch candidate architectures, weigh trade-offs (performance vs cost vs time-to-market), and propose a phased delivery plan that protects the critical path. We document security and compliance requirements upfront, work with your governance team to confirm we understand audit and vendor management expectations, and create a scope definition that the business, procurement, and delivery teams all sign off on. This produces a technical brief, architecture diagrams, a realistic roadmap with resource requirements, and a clear understanding of what happens if priorities shift or new constraints emerge.

Many enterprises want discovery done quickly but cannot spare senior engineers from existing delivery commitments. Our team works across the UK, Spain, and Ukraine, giving you access to specialists in security architecture, cloud infrastructure, data systems, and enterprise integration without hiring contractors into your office or waiting weeks for availability. We work alongside your technical leads as peers, not subcontractors. Your engineers stay focused on live systems; we add discovery capacity, bring fresh perspectives on trade-offs, and leave behind documentation and a roadmap your team can own and execute. If you choose to move forward with us for delivery, the discovery team carries that context and stakeholder relationships forward, eliminating ramp-up delay.

How Specialist Capacity Accelerates Discovery Without Disrupting Your Team

WHAT YOU GET

Built around how your business works

  • Architecture and scope clarity before major budget commitments reduce rework and scope creep
  • Multi-stakeholder discovery workshops ensure alignment across teams, departments, and leadership
  • Security and governance frameworks embedded from discovery, not bolted on later
  • Nearshore delivery model (UK, Spain, Ukraine) brings specialist capacity without internal team disruption
  • Structured roadmap and phasing plan gives confidence to board, procurement, and technical leadership

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Evolve ran a series of workshops with key business stakeholders to understand the business challenge we were facing and to help us define the right solution. The team then held my hand every step of the way in developing our Discount and Rebate Management Solution, which went live in January across 7 countries.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

Enterprise software projects in the UK face specific pressures: complex vendor and procurement processes, increasingly strict security and data governance requirements, and stakeholder bases spanning multiple business units. Structured discovery services address this by creating a single agreed reference document that satisfies procurement reviews, security sign-offs, and board-level governance expectations simultaneously. For organisations with teams across the UK and Europe, a nearshore partner brings timezone flexibility and English/Spanish market expertise without the friction of offshore handovers, making discovery faster and stakeholder alignment easier to maintain.

OUR PROVEN PROCESS

From first call to ongoing support

Our process has guided startups, scaleups and enterprises from concept to reality, and continues after launch.

  1. 01

    Discovery

A free 30-minute consultation followed by a stakeholder workshop, where we listen to your challenges, validate assumptions and build an outside-in view of your situation.

  2. 02

    Plan & design

We scope the project, define milestones and deliverables, then research your market, wireframe the UX and prototype the UI so the direction is agreed before a line of code.

  3. 03

    Build

We assemble your dedicated team, establish reporting and work in iterative Scrum sprints, delivering a working MVP or proof of concept you can test with real users.

  4. 04

    Launch & support

We ship, sign off, and keep your product current through our support service or a permanent extended team as your business evolves.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

How do you ensure discovery actually reflects what our business needs, not just what developers think is interesting?

We start every discovery by interviewing the business owner, product sponsor, and key users alongside technical leadership. We ask about business outcomes first: what problem are you solving? What does success look like in 12 months? We tie every technical decision back to that outcome. If your security team says you need a certain compliance standard, we design for it. If your operations team worries about maintenance burden, we factor that into architecture choices. We also avoid presenting a single 'recommended' architecture; instead, we show trade-offs so your leadership team understands what you gain and lose with each approach.

What if our stakeholders disagree on priorities during discovery?

That's exactly what discovery is designed to surface. If the business sponsor wants fast time-to-market but the CTO needs a highly scalable platform, we model both scenarios: the rapid-path architecture and the long-term-scale architecture. We show the team what each costs, what technical debt each carries, and what the migration path looks like if you start with one and move to the other. Then your leadership team makes the trade-off consciously, with full information. We document that decision so when tensions arise later, everyone knows why you chose the path you did.

How long does a technical discovery workshop typically take?

A typical discovery for a mid-market or enterprise project runs 4 to 8 weeks, depending on scope and stakeholder complexity. If you're scoping a single application, you're closer to 4 weeks. If you're planning a portfolio-wide transformation or multi-system integration, add time for broader stakeholder interviews and trade-off analysis. We front-load the work, so you get a complete brief and roadmap by the end, not incremental findings trickling in over months.

Do you include security and compliance assessment in discovery?

Yes. We work with your security and compliance teams to understand your standards, audit requirements, and risk appetite. We ask about data sensitivity, regulatory frameworks (GDPR, PCI, SOC 2, industry-specific standards), and your vendor management process. We then design architecture choices that satisfy those requirements and document which parts of your infrastructure need to be audited or certified before you go live. This prevents the common scenario where security is treated as a phase after build rather than a constraint from day one.

What happens if discovery reveals the project is riskier or more complex than expected?

That's valuable. If discovery uncovers hidden complexity, it's far cheaper to discover it in a workshop than after a 6-month build. Our job is to tell you the truth. If the project looks riskier, we propose ways to reduce risk: smaller initial scope, a phased approach, pilot phases, or a different technical strategy. We also help you decide whether to proceed, pivot, or pause. You have that clarity before you commit significant budget.

Can we use this discovery as a tender brief for other vendors if we decide not to work with you?

Yes. The discovery deliverable is yours to own. It includes architecture diagrams, scope definitions, roadmaps, and technical assumptions. If you want to take that brief to other vendors for delivery, you can. We've designed it to be clear enough that a competent team can read it and understand your build without us explaining it again. That said, if you choose to work with us for delivery, your discovery team stays engaged, which eliminates ramp-up and carries stakeholder context forward.
