WHAT YOU GET

Built around how your business works

  • Map legacy system dependencies and integration points before proposing new architecture
  • Identify production constraints and inventory workflows that shape technical choices
  • Agree on scope, timeline, and realistic budget based on actual manufacturing complexity
  • Document ERP requirements and third-party system handoffs upfront
  • Reduce build risk by validating technical approach with stakeholders before development starts

Manufacturing environments carry operational complexity that generic software discovery misses. Production schedules don't wait for rework. Inventory accuracy directly affects cash flow. Legacy ERP systems hold years of custom workflows and data that any new platform must respect or replace carefully. A technical discovery workshop surfaces these constraints early. You identify which systems must integrate, which processes are non-negotiable, and which pain points are worth solving now versus later. This prevents building software that looks good in theory but breaks production on day one.

01

Why Manufacturing Needs Structured Discovery

02

What Happens in a Discovery Workshop

We spend time with your operations team, finance leads, and technical staff to understand the real day-to-day. Not what a process manual says should happen, but what actually happens. We map current workflows, identify bottlenecks, and document data dependencies. We review your existing systems (ERP, MES, inventory software, finance platforms) and understand their constraints and integration points. From this, we create a technical roadmap that prioritizes what matters most to production. We scope features honestly, estimate effort based on your actual complexity, and agree on a realistic timeline. You leave with a shared understanding of what you're building, why, and what it costs.

How This Reduces Project Risk

Scope creep in manufacturing software often comes from undiscovered dependencies. A team thinks they're building an inventory system, then discovers it must sync with three legacy systems running on different schedules. A production management platform needs to handle exception workflows that weren't documented. A discovery workshop finds these gaps before a single line of code is written. You commit budget knowing what you're paying for. You avoid the cost of rework or abandoned features mid-project. You also build trust with your development partner, because you've both signed up for the same reality, not competing assumptions about what 'manufacturing software development' means.

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in the UK

UK manufacturers increasingly face pressure to improve production efficiency and inventory accuracy without replacing working systems entirely. Legacy ERP platforms often handle core operations but lack integration points for modern analytics or automation tools. A structured discovery process identifies whether you need custom integration middleware, targeted new software, or a phased ERP migration. This matters particularly for mid-market manufacturers (50-300 employees) where software spending is significant but headcount for in-house technical planning is thin. Discovery workshops done with a team experienced in production management systems and UK manufacturing contexts uncover realistic scope and prevent costly overspecification.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

How long does a technical discovery workshop typically take?

Most discovery engagements run 2-4 weeks, depending on complexity and team availability. We schedule focused sessions with operations, finance, IT, and leadership, then synthesize findings into a roadmap document. Some manufacturers need a week of interviews and workshops; others with clearer processes move faster. We set a realistic timeline upfront based on your systems and team size.

Do we need to involve our whole team in discovery, or just technical staff?

You need both. Technical staff show us what systems exist and how they connect. Operations and production managers tell us what actually happens on the floor. Finance tells us what data accuracy matters most. Leadership sets budget and timeline constraints. We've seen projects fail because discovery skipped frontline users and then built features nobody actually needed. We typically involve 5-8 people across your business, not 50.

What if our legacy ERP is too old to document properly?

This is common. We work backwards from current output. We trace data flows, watch actual workflows, and talk to the people who run it daily. You'd be surprised what gets undocumented in a system that's been in place for 15 years. We also audit whether integration is even worthwhile or if a cleaner cut to new software makes more sense financially. Either way, discovery surfaces that decision before you've spent on development.

Can discovery define scope for an ERP software development project?

Yes, but discovery reframes it. Instead of 'build an ERP', discovery asks which ERP-level features you actually need versus what a generic product handles. Many manufacturers discover they need a specific production planning module integrated with their existing finance software, not a full ERP replacement. This changes cost, risk, and timeline dramatically. We scope honestly against your actual production and financial workflows, not a feature checklist.

What deliverables do we get from the discovery process?

You receive a technical roadmap document that includes current system mapping, identified integration points, prioritized features, a realistic scope for phase one, effort estimates, and a timeline. You also get a list of risks we've identified and how to mitigate them. Most importantly, you get alignment between business stakeholders and technical reality. You can then use this roadmap to brief other vendors or kick off development with us.

How does discovery help if we're not sure what software we actually need?

That's the core value. Many manufacturing leaders feel production inefficiency or inventory accuracy problems but aren't sure what software would help. Discovery structures that question. We ask what process is broken, how much it costs, what a better state looks like, and what software could get you there. You might discover the problem isn't software at all, or it's a smaller, targeted tool rather than a big platform. Either way, you stop guessing and commit with confidence.
