Why technical discovery matters before you build

Most projects fail not because developers are inexperienced, but because the brief was unclear. A CTO approves a spec. Three months later, the architecture doesn't handle the data volume. The integration with your legacy system was left vague. A discovery workshop runs 3-5 days and costs a fraction of a failed build. You walk out with a statement of work that actually reflects reality: what's hard, what's simple, what order things need to happen in, and what trade-offs exist. That clarity lets your team or a vendor bid confidently. It also saves you from picking the wrong technical path.

We start by listening. What's the business problem? Who uses it, and how? What systems are already in place? Then we sketch out the data model, user flows, and integration points on a whiteboard. We ask uncomfortable questions: Do you really need machine learning, or is a rules engine enough? Should this be a mobile app or a web app, or both? Can you migrate your users gradually, or do you need a cutover? We document the answers, challenge assumptions, and identify where you'll need specialist skills (mobile, DevOps, security, etc.). The output is a technical brief, architecture diagram, and phased roadmap that your team understands.

03

Who runs discovery for you

Our lead technologist sits with you, not a sales person. They've built systems at scale in production. They know what goes wrong, what costs money later, and what's genuinely just a nice-to-have. We bring in specialists from our UK and nearshore team if you need deep input on legacy migration, mobile platforms, or infrastructure. Your input is the hard part; our job is to translate business goals into technical decisions and document them clearly enough that anyone can execute.

WHAT YOU GET

Built around how your business works

  • 01Structured discovery sessions that map dependencies, constraints, and technical risks upfront
  • 02Clear architecture recommendations based on your team size, timeline, and business goals
  • 03Scope definition that separates MVP from later releases, preventing scope creep
  • 04Roadmap clarity showing phasing, integrations, and infrastructure decisions before coding starts
  • 05Deliverables you can share with stakeholders, vendors, or your own development team

LOCAL INSIGHT

Working with businesses in Bristol

Bristol's tech and creative-digital cluster means access to talented teams, but it also means competition for good people and higher salary costs for in-house hiring. A focused discovery workshop with an external partner gives you the strategic clarity to hire the right people (or engage an extended team) without overpaying for a long hiring cycle. Many Bristol founders and CTOs use discovery as a gate between fundraising and build, turning investor feedback into a concrete, costed roadmap.

FAQ

Questions we hear most often

Still unsure how this would work for your business?

How long does a technical discovery workshop actually take?

Typically 3-5 days, depending on the scope of what you're building and how quickly your team can make decisions. If you're scoping a simple MVP for a web app, it might be closer to 3 days. If you're modernising a legacy system with multiple integrations, allow 5 days. We schedule blocks of 4-6 hours per day so your stakeholders can keep working on other things.

What if our product requirements aren't fully locked down yet?

That's actually the best time to run discovery. We help you stress-test the requirements you do have and identify the gaps. We'll ask whether you're solving a real problem or chasing a feature. Discovery forces prioritisation early, which is exactly when it's cheapest to change your mind. We output a prioritised roadmap with clear phases so you can launch fast and add features based on user feedback.

Can you discovery a project if we already have legacy code?

Yes, and legacy systems need discovery most. We'll review your current architecture, database, and dependencies to understand what's safe to change and what needs to stay. That informs whether you refactor, re-platform, or rewrite in phases. Legacy discovery is often longer (5-7 days) because you need to understand what's actually in the system and what debt exists.

Who should be in the room during discovery sessions?

Core stakeholders: your founder or CTO, a product owner, and someone who knows your current systems (if you have them). Include a finance person if budget constraints are real. The more decision-makers present, the faster we move because we're not waiting for sign-off via email. We typically meet 4-6 hours per day so people aren't exhausted and can still handle urgent issues.

Do you help us hire developers after discovery, or pick a vendor?

We won't tell you who to hire or who to outsource to, but the discovery brief we produce is exactly what a vendor needs to bid fairly. Many clients use it to run a proper RFP process. Some decide to hire in-house based on the roadmap. Others engage our nearshore team in Spain or Ukraine to extend their capacity. The brief removes the guesswork, so you pick based on fit and trust, not because you don't know what you're asking for.

What deliverables do we get from discovery?

A technical brief (5-15 pages, depending on complexity), architecture diagrams, a prioritised roadmap with phases and effort estimates, a data model sketch, integration points mapped, and a summary of decisions and trade-offs. All in plain language, not jargon. You own these documents. Share them with your board, investors, in-house team, or a vendor. They're yours to use.
